i removed one lift cylinder from a w d. i am almost ready to replace it. how can i tell if it is working? there are 2 lift cylinders on the rock shaft.

Easy disconnect one cylinder at a time and plug the hose or the place the hose comes out of and then try to lift. If the cylinder is working the lift will work if it is not the lift will not work

The problem is most people over think things and in doing so they get lost as to how to figure things out. LOL

OR:
IIRC, on the WD one cylinder disconnects from the rock arm & swings forward to lift front gangs of cultivator. Just have to pull one pin.
After hooking up the hose, let that one cylinder hang down. Hang an implement on the rear, place a block of wood under the cylinder that is hanging free. Engage the lift. The hanging cylinder should extend until it hits the block. Then either the implement or the tractor should lift, which ever is the easiest load. When that cylinder bottoms out, the other should lift. No need to mess with disconnecting & capping hoses.
Clear as mud, but it covers the ground.
