w d or w d 45? that is the question

are there any hard and fast ways to tell the difference between a w d and a w d 45?
parts supplier says if gear shift lever has a bend , then it is a w d 45. emblems say w d 45. motor seems to be w d.

A WC/WD engine has the bolt on plate on the right side of the engine and the WD45 does not have that plate. But a WD engine will bolt right into a WD45 and WD45 engine will blot right in a WD so it could well be a mutt. When I got my W Speed Patrol it had a WD45 engine in it that was wore out and I picked up a cheap WD with a very good engine so I put the WD engine it in which was the correct engine for the machine

The late model WD's had the bent gearshift/constant mesh transmission at chassis s/n 127,001 ? and up. WD-45's started at chassis s/n 146,607. So, there were 20,000 late model WD's with the same transmission as a WD-45. Engines are interchangeable as are MANY of the engine parts. WD-45's had a larger manifold and carb and air cleaner hose over the WD. The crankshaft was different as were the piston tops and compression ratio.

thanks , so no definite way. hmm. tractor has a w d engine and crooked gear shift lever.

The chassis serial number on the left rear brake housing will tell you what it started life as. Over the course of nearly 60 years it is hard telling what has been done to one. Especially given the total interchangeably of the engines.

45s had a curved seat support with a slotted adjustment for the spring/shock absorber. The seat mounted to a maybe 1/4" thick steel plate that went under the sheetmetal
brake cover. Of course that could have been changed out too by now.
