B starter question

I friend of mine has a B with starter problems. I put a new flywheel gear on it last year and new starter bendix, all was fine for a few months, now its not engaging most of the time. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

first Oi would lube the starter throwout spirals with WD 40 anything heavier will cause the Bendix gear to be too slow to engage and it will be going too fast by the time it tries to engage. If that does not work change the ring gear.

Be sure that you have a good ground cable and the surface where the starter and the torque tube meet are clean and making good contact

The bendix was most likely not engaging far enough to last in the beginning for some reason.

The starter ground comes from the stud that locks the starter in its proper location. If the ground came from the hole it slides in you would never have to tighten a battery cable. To get a proper ground from the mounting hole it would have to be split and a way to tighten it.

Dick I have to disagree with you.
The hole that the starter goes into affords more ground contact then the bolt does. The bolt is needed to hold the starter in the hole and prevent the starter from turning. Installing the starter in the hole doesn't have anything to do with battery cables. The housing supplies the ground and the cable supplies the power. Thanks Bob

Back the bolt out to loose and see what you have. You will find it will work like a loose battery cable. 20 years ago I was told that you had to have the hole clean for ground. I wire wheeled, sanded and still could not get it to start on the 6 volt battery. I was turning the stud in with my fingers to where the starter was held in place. When I tightened the stud tight it started. I don't remove the paint from it anymore. Any place that rust can develop you can not get a good ground. I have removed starters that were rusted tight and had to be heated, beat and pried to remove. However the ground wire from the battery to the tractor is made with a bolt. When the stud is in tight into the starter it works the same as the bolt from the battery cable to the tractor. I am not giving an opinion I am only giving what I have proved to myself thru trial and fail.

The last two torque tubes I have prepared for use I painted the inside with ceramic red caliper paint and took no care to cover the hole when painting the outside as well.

I would check to see if your starter has 12 teeth on the bendix, not 14 or 10... that may be a issue. some say a ca and b starter are the same....not so.
