Allis Chalmers WC mag shut off pull rod

I purchased a 1943 WC steel rearend which I'm assuming is very low hours still 4 inch bore flat top pistons and the shifter is smooth. The tractor at one time had a picker mounted on it. It has a pull rod that runs down to the mag. wasn't sure if since it had a picker if that's why they used the pull rod to ground the mag out with out having to take the picker shields off? How long was that used or was it an option? And is the mag specifically built for that application? Thanks everyone.

That is the way all of the later ones were built. The switch was mounted on the magneto externally ad operated by the rod. Not many survived as dampness would cause the switch to ground the mag when it wasn't supposed to so they were removed and a wire was run to a switch near the operator.

Our picker had shields...the one on the left side had a sliding door near the carb, so you could set the choke. Right side shield was solid. They would interchange from one side to the other. I suppose if you had a choke rod at the steering wheel, you could use the sliding door shield on the right side and check engine oil?

The mag was set up different if you had that shut off rod. It is a little flap that basically pulls back and hits the ground rod. It was also on the back side toward the block and not in the front.
