Allis C steeriong gear box

Need information on removal of steering gear box on Allis C narrow front. Or is there an adjustment to take free play out of steering wheel? Mine has about 3/4 to 1 round of free p[lay before wheels turn. Just put all new bearings and seal in pedalstal. So there is still free play. Any information help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks
Buddy Terry

Check the pitman arm at the gearbox. My boys will work loose and gain about a half turn. There is a way to tighten up the worm gear. It depends on which box you have, a Ross or Gemmer. The Ross does not have an adjusting screw on the end opposite the steering shaft and the Gemmer does. Service manual describes how to adjust the play.

This is how it will look directly after removal and just before you reinstall the steering box.

The Gemmer does have an adjusting screw but does not work the same as the Ross adjusting screw.
The Gemmer is a gear type rather than being a screw type. The Gemmer can be adjusted without removal. However it may have to be removed and loosened to get it to move.

Thanks Dick for the pictures and information. I was hoping that I would not have to remove all the sheet metal, but that was the only way I saw that it could be done. But thought I would ask and see if anyone had any other ideas about this.

Thanks

Sounds like the follower is worn. It can be built up with weld or replaced with John
Deere part # AM1515T, Pawl or Follower. It was used on a JD model M. Bob
