AC 185 Hand Primer Pump issues....!

Hey guys,
had a hankering lately to get my Dads old 185 back up to scratch. She runs great but for some reason leaks fuel from various locations which I guess I will tackle one at the time.

The first and one of the worst is from the hand primer pump, which I am assuming is the factory unit but it seems to me like Pop has modified it...or reconfigured it for some reason.

As of right now it is mounted to some kind of little plate and bolted to the block near one of the freeze plug locations...see photo.

Looks a little non-standard to me....can any of you guys upload me a pic of your primer pump mounting configuration so I can see how I need to proceed?

thanks,
Al

Thanks for your reply Bob....any chance of finding a replacement or will I have to go after market? I know there are all kind of little hand pumps out there....but I'd like to stick to original parts if I could....thanks!

There's a little rubber on the end of the plunger. If Agco doesn't have it, a diesel repair shop probably could get it.
You can go to Agco parts and look up these items on line.

Thank you Sir....I will check that out.

And I will probably continue to use this thread to try to see why my photos aren't loading....I think when I get to tackling some of the other problems they will help.

I did see where the edit function is not working at the moment....maybe it is effecting the the photo uploads as well...we'll see.

Thanks again!

That was factory mounting for the primer pump, worked great when new, now get rid of it, the pump will gravity feed fast and these pumps are just a place to leak air in ;

So are you saying that this pump is no longer needed and to remove it?

And that if I get air in the lines gravity will take care of this?

The reason I ask is because I have a fairly serious bit of fuel coming from around the injectors....and I am assuming that to fix this I will have to take the lines loose from the injectors. And after that they will need to be bled....correct?

As a rule, the injectors don't usually leak fuel, so be absolutely sure you know what you're getting into before just tearing things apart. These engines are famous for the valve cover gasket leaking and people think it's the injectors leaking. Been there....dun that.

Thanks for the advice!
And yes....I will be careful...I plan on giving her a good pressure washing and clean her up nice so that I can take some video of what's going on with the injectors.

Trust me, I hope that it does end up being the valve cover....I can change that every couple of years if need be!...lol

Thanks again!

When the valve cover gasket leaks, the oil runs down into the injector holes and then boils out when the engine is up to operating temperature. The leak is BLACK like motor oil. Even after you replace the gasket, it takes some time for the injector bores to completely dry up. A fuel leak will have no color to it.

That's why I'm a little curious about it.

There is definitely some oil leaking down....but coming out of the injector ports what I'm thinking is diesel fuel is washing clean little rivers down thru the oil.

I will try to get so pics.

Thnx

Link to photo....I just uploaded the photo to my website...here's the link:

I was having fuel issues with my 185 this week also . Acted up a couple times during hay
season . Didn't quit running just acted up. Ran it out of fuel splitting wood in the
fall . Put fuel in primed it got it going . Got it out of the shed last weekend and it
was surging and sputtering bad . Took hand pump apart and rubbers were shot . Went and
got some 1/4" fittings ,got rid of the pump . Purrs like a kitten again. Gravity feed to
the pump wasn't going to well so I cracked the fitting on top of the pump , held my hand
over the filler neck and took my blow gun and pressurised the tank a bit . Worked
perfect.

Ingenuitive.....thanks!
And yes....at least for now I have bypassed the primer pump as well.
So leak averted....fired right up and purring like a kitten!

Finally....!
