Tractor Stuck in "Start"

Hi. We have a 1969 AC 615, that I have just tried to start after sitting all winter. Turned the key, but just a click, so I figure it needs a jump. I connect jumper cables to truck (correctly), and try to start the tractor. It did not seem to be getting enough power still, as it was turning very slowly, not fast enough to start it. I turned the key off, but the engine kept turning...I pulled the key but it kept going. At his point I noticed the cables are smoking at the truck terminal, so I disconnect them, and the engine stops trying to start. I then disconnected the battery to have it tested. Battery is fine.

When I reconnect it, it is sparking like it is trying to draw power even though the key is out. I leave the second terminal touching for a second, and the engine starts turning again. So, I am thinking I inadvertently hot wired it, possibly by melting 2 wires together, or something like that. Basically any time it has power, the engine starts turning. Any ideas on what might have caused this, or what I should try next? Thanks.

The low voltage and slow turning had the starter solenoid chattering like a machine gun, welding the solenoid contacts together, making it crank as soon as a battery is connected.

If your lucky, a few hammer taps applied to the solenoid body may break the welds and allow everything to return to normal operation.
Worst case, you need to remove the plastic solenoid cover and clean up the welded contacts. If the contacts are badly worn, replace the solenoid.

Steve Replace sel, if that thing sticks while you are not around you may come back to find a fried tractor. Delco Sel can do it.

Hi Guys....looking through the electrical schematic, the only solenoid I see on here is for the heater, is that the one I should be looking at? I see on the gasoline model, there is an additional one, but this is a diesel.

Many solenoids are part of the starter so it may not show up in a wiring diagram
