electrical short

Hi everyone I have a problem with my allis chalmers model G , it seems that I have an eledtrical short in my G how do I check for this short,it drains my battery in a few days, cant seem to figure it out, thanks

It is not a short as there would be fire. I would look at the cutout relay , it should open when engine off. The other possibility is the ignition on-off switch .

Pretty simple to find a short. Take a simple test light and remove a wire at the time and put the light in series with what you unhook if it light then you know where your short is. If it still has the 6 volt system good chance the V.R. has burnt points that are welded together so the generator tries to motor and that will discharge a battery pretty fast

Check to see if the problem is in the battery or in the tractor's electrical system. Disconnect one cable from the battery, doesn't matter which one, then see if the battery discharges on it's own, without involving the tractor at all. Batteries sometimes go bad with an internal short.

While it does not matter which cable he removes it is always safer to remove the negative one first then the positive one if it is negative ground that is. That way you cannot short out the wrench when taking a cable off

If it happened to be the cutout relay (between BAT and GEN/ARM terminals) is stuck closed (it should open upon shut down), the genny will get warm (would actually spin if belt removed) but that will drain a battery fairly fast.

For a less severe (higher resistance) short, if you removed the batterys ungrounded cable, placed one end of a test lamp on it (the battery post), then if you find the short you're lookin for it will light up as its getting the ground via the short.

If you remove a battery cable but she still discharges its a bad battery instead of some short in the tractor causing it
