Allis-Chalmers B Engine Serial Number Loc

Good evening, I have a 1948 (i believe), Allis-Chalmers Model B, B80823 is the tractor serial number, and I am trying to find the location of the engine serial number to see if it could possibly be the original engine in the tractor. The hood is not currently off, does it need to be off to see engine serial number? I see numbers on the side of the engine block but there casting numbers I think. Are there any casting or serial numbers on any other components of this tractor? Very soon it is goin inside to get restored. Just want some more information on it before I begin. As far as I know it's all original except for the 12V battery that was in it when I bought it and the 12V alternator I'm putting on it this weekend. I'm very excited to get this project started.

I am new to restoration, first time actually, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Odd are it is and odds are it doesn't match. Blocks were given serial numbers separate of the tractor. Should be stamped on the rear flange by the bell housing. It will start with CE....

They made the tractor from 1938 to 1958..... very few modifications in the motor and most have been updated over the past 60 years... all you really need to know is the piston diameter to buy new rings... check the ring thickness also in case it has M&W pistons or aftermarket. all bearings, gaskets, valves, cam, crank, etc are all interchangeable.

It you can not find the engine serial number on the left side rear flange it will be behind the gas tank.

I thank everyone for the help and as soon as the weather cooperates, no rain, I will be taking the hood off so I can do a more thorough search. Again thank you everyone for your help.

I have a 1948 B and the engine serial # is found like Aaron has described, in line with the back of the air cleaner on the flange. Mine is CE 87289 G and someone with a book told
me that should be a '48 engine without me telling the year of the tractor. If your engine # is anything close to mine it's most likely a '48 engine.

I took the hood and gas tank off tonight, I could not find any number on the back of the engine in any location. I also tried lightly sanding the flange that yall said it was stamped to get the paint off it. And I could see nothing. It appears as though it's been repainted, is there any way they could've accidently taken it off with a wire brush or something of that sort while preparing for paint? I will have to look again when I split the tractor, hopefully soon. Thanks everyone for their help.

It's unlikely that someone would have removed the engine serial #, it would take a grinder or an aggressive sanding disc. The spot that Dick L has a picture of can be viewed without taking the gas tank off, you could check there too.

Based on that information from the other website, it is at least a 1948 block. As the casting digit is "20'. I do understand however that it could still be swapped, and I'm sure there's been internal engine work done to the engine at one time. I have attempted to add a picture of that stamping. I have also attempted to add a picture of where I understand I should be looking for a engine serial number to clarify I'm looking in the right spot. This forum has been a tremendous help already. Is where my finger pointing the correct location I should be looking in? Underneath the gas tank, to the right of the air cleaner on the rear of the engine?

That's the general location if the motor was built in 1938- 39 era....... Yours should be 10 years newer and the location of the stamp should be on the left side , rear corner of motor, on the bellhousing flange... If not there, it was filed off or a replacement motor was installed.

Your number would be on the flange flat between the engine stand bolt and the block behind my die grinder. No number on mine as it is the same block in the picture below.

I think I found it. I have tried to add a picture, although the quality is not the greatest. It appears to read CE 73093 G. Anyone in agreement or can you see something I can't? Which also means it very possibly is a 1948 engine, maybe not original but still the same year which I think is very cool. (I'm only 20 years old, so I have alot to learn about older equipment and i love to find old possibly original things.) Thank you everyone for your help!

That would be it. Most likely the original block unless it had been broken in the past. Probably on its 3rd or 4th overhaul, but original block and head. Congrats on finding it.

it'd been overhauled just was hoping
there was a number somewhere. And
