190XT Head Bolts

Where would be the preferred place to buy new head bolts and head gasket for a late model 190XT? Are different kinds of gaskets available? Hoping that that's all that is needed. Motor and complete head job about 400 hours ago, head retorque at 150 hours. Started "puffing" out the air cleaner last fall with slight miss.....Thanks in advance.....Ron
 
Maybe an exhaust rocker adjustment backed off, or is not opening for some reason, then the remaining cylinder charge will "pop back" through the intake when it opens. See that a lot on diesel engines too, head may not need pulled, worth pulling the valve cover first for a look at the valve train..
 
Head bolts are never replaced on one of those engines unless there is damage to them (pitting/ corrosion), especially where the threads meet the shank. If you have a rocker arm adjuster that backed off, you can repair it by taking a 3/8" fine thread nut and sawing it in half (top to bottom) and using it on the underside of the rocker arm for a lock.
 
If you do get right into it- AC sent out a service bulletin stating that you could add 10% to the head bolt torque value and not have to re torque head. That would make it 165 ft.lbs., if I recall correctly.
 
Thanks muchly. I never thought of that concerning the valve adjuster moving back. I remember when torqueing the head and adjusting the valves, a couple of neighbours dropped in and we got to talking and maybe I missed tightening a jam nut properly. Hope it's just that. The head had the whole deal, planed, seats, guides, springs, valves, rotators, injectors. Runs really well. Thank-you again, I'll keep you updated......Ron
 
Again- if memory serves correctly, those engines had no jam nut on the rocker adjuster. The screw was an interference fit. I believe that's why DrAllis offered the idea of making a jam nut.
