D17 series IV vs AC 170

I know in theory Allis said they were the same, but I bet there were a few small differences.

I know they upped the HP for both the gas and diesel versions for one.

Besides the sheet metal, the power steering is the major difference. D17 was still the old hyd. assist, mechanical steering. 170 is hydrostatic- rotary valve below the steering wheel, and cylinder up under the front end.

D17 had a generator. 170 had alternator w/tach drive.

On the late models, maybe just the 175, but I'm not sure, they moved the hyd. pump up to where it was driven off the front of the engine, and the front axle assembly was changed.

The diesel D17s had a six cylinder A-C engine, One-Seventy and 170 had four cylinder Perkins. The later models had a different front axle and the front drive hydraulic pump. You can compare all of the specs on tractordata.com.

A One-Seventy gas has the same gear ratios in all gears as a D-17 diesel. Must be an high idle RPM difference, lazy governor (likely) and/or tire size diameter difference between the two tractors.
