Help With Cam Removal

Hello;

According to the IT manual there are bolts you access through the holes on the cam gear for the Camshaft removal and inspection, 226 gas. Problem is, there are no bolts to remove there , and I have looked closely a few times.
So, how do you remove the cam? Either overhaul it right, or not at all.

Thank you

Pretty sure you take the front cover off and slide the cam out. Nothing is holding it in once the front cover is off. Goes better if the block is upside down to keep the lifters from catching.

I don't know about the 226 engine, but on the older WD engines there was a thrust screw on the cover that came off with the cover and I think the cam just pulled out. If the oil pressure was good you may not need to replace the cam bearings. If oil pressure was low it is a must. Oil goes down the cam to the cam bearings, to the crankshaft. If you lose too much oil at the cam bearings you don't get much at the crank. If you have 12 to 15 lbs. pressure you are good, these engines didn't have a lot of oil pressure. Make sure the holes in the new cam bearings line up with the oil holes in the block when you press them in. If you remove the camshaft and are going to reuse the old cam bearings be very careful not to "shave" the bearings with a cam lobe when you pull the camshaft out.

Hello;

On the subject of the oil pressure, the engine would make a knocking sound at startup and would take 5-8 seconds to develop oil pressure.
