Piston Scuffing Questions

Hello;

Doing a rebuild on a 226 gas , 1963 D- 17 Series 3 that has a knocking on startup.

Has scratching on pistons and bright spots, and wonder if this is causing the "rap" for startup 5-8 seconds. All else internals are within specifications, with mains being just over. .003

Thinking the same thing...borderline on the looser side...but I would not expect it to "Rattle"..

If ya can, get them down to LESS than .002"

I guess, at this point you KNOW weather or not ya left a Wrench in it...!!!

Can you check the End-Play of the Cam.?

How much clearance does the Thrust bearing on the crankshaft have.?

How much "Time" is on those pistons.? They do look like they have a good many hrs on them.. If not I would be concerned, but those Sleeves usually do not cause a piston problem..

Well I have no idea of the hours but a lot is a good bet. Also, the previous owner "lent" the tractor to a lady that "ran the tractor 3 quarts low, and had to replace the head gasket". Brake lock was on , running it that way for the better part of the day.

Women drivers!

I still did not find the "Knock" in the engine.

With it down as far as you have gone I would have the crank checked by a machine shop and maybe turned and new rod and main bearing installed and at the very least new rings. I have a JD 1020 in the shop that all looked good but after having the crank check it needed to be turned which was doen

The pistons and bores need to be "mic'd". That's the only way your going to know.

Service manual says .002-.004 for bearings. unless the crank is worn unevenly, .003 is great. I would not want to run one of these motors at .001. You'll have more trouble running too tight and maybe seizing a bearing than running at .004 a little too loose. Still might be worth having the crank checked by a shop is your not comfortable checking it since you are having a knock.
