Need Help Alis Chamler?? Wico mag

So my brother in-law bought his house a year ago and this was in a tent. We have played around with it many times trying to get spark. We finally did get spark (condenser) pretty sure we timed the mag right. (it's a wico series c) We think it's a 1938 but not sure found a number stamped on the side under the oil breather that says 7680 and a number raised at the rear of the motor stamped that says 06 17 38 on the block. We are getting it top pop but that's it.
Wondering if the engine needs to be timed and if anyone had some input for me on how to do it. I have read a few articles on how to do it but just double checking. Also firing order not sure it was right to begin and who knows if it was right i'm seeing 1342 as on option. Here is a picture of it any help would be much appreciated

Go on line to the Jensales site. If you intend to keep the machine you will get much better performance with a "WICO X"
 
Sounds like the wires could be on wrong. Check the firing order.

If you had the magneto off. The magneto will need to be timed to the engine. Get the engine on top dead center number one cylinder
compression stroke. Then turn the rotor inside the magneto to the number spark plug tower. Should be ready to install.

I think the model C Wico doesn't have timing marks on the rotor drive gears. The internal gears could be timed wrong.

I too would look for a Wico X series. Much better magneto. The Allis Number is XH3001
 
Thanks for the advice. Will change to the X but want to make sure when it starts that there isn't any huge issue that need to dealt with before updating the mag.

Do you happen to know what the timing order is on this . I'm getting conflicting information. Is cylinder #1 at the front of the engine. Thanks
 
My Allis Chalmers m with the 318ci ingine the firing order is 1243.
I had to pull the mag whin I put it back on I wired it 1342 all it would do is pop once in a while.
wired it 1243 it runs fine
 
Ok on the cap what is the sequence of the. Is it #1 inside, then two outside then three inside and four outside? and is the cylinders 1234 from front to back? Sorry for all the questions but I know it was messed with before we started.

Although I am not familiar with your particular machine or mag, in general for 4 cylinder AC engines with FM or WICO mags, this is the way that it works. The cylinders are numbered 1,2,3,4 from the radiator back. The textbook location on the mag for #1 cylinder is identified by looking at the mag from the rear of the tractor towards the front. Wire position at top left, or 10:30 o'clock is where the wire to #1 cylinder goes. The rotating distributor inside the mag cap cannot skip contacts as it rotates clockwise from the position that I described. The crankshaft shape in common 4 cylinder AC engines requires that the cylinders fire in the order 1,2,4,3. So, in the 2:30 cap position goes the wire running to #2 cylinder. In the 4:30 cap position goes the wire running to #4 cylinder. The remaining contact at 7:30 on the cap gets the wire running to #3 cylinder.
When #1 cylinder is brought to top dead center on its compression stroke, the distributor under the mag cap should be close to pointing at the #1 location, 10:30.
