I had a friend do an overhaul on my WD. Now the throttle won't open up all the way (it does if I grab it by hand on the carb). Do I need to adjust the linkage somewhere, or what should I do. I'm not the best mechanic, but this can't be that hard? Thanks for any help!!

Try to see where the linkage was set before taking it apart, marks on the rods etc. If this doesn't work I would go by the AC manual you have or should have by now. A reprint of the original AC manual, not the I&T although it may have the info the AC manual is generally better.

You did not say if you are familiar with the WD, are a Farmer or have ever been around them...

It is Normal for the actual Throttle LEVER to NOT go completely down to the bottom of the Quadrant..

PTO speed usually is at about 40 % of the arc, from the top..

As far as the Carburetor "Opening"...are you expecting the carburetor Butterfly ( Linkage lever on the back side) to OPEN COMPLETELY and STAY OPEN..?

You should hope that NEVER happens..the GOVERNORS will control the Carburetor operation..

If it is a problem of BINDING in the Linkage, that should be fairly easy to trace down..

IF I have been too Basic, I am sorry..sometimes we do have a "New Owner" who has NO idea how to operate one of these Vintage Marvels..!

All we need when you ask for help of information is to supply ALL the information you can give us...the MORE the Better..!!

Best of luck and let us know how it progresses...!

If your throttle leaver won't go to the bottom end f the quadrant your linkage is not adjusted correctly.set screw right under the fuel tank I believe.

I disagree about pto speed being 40% from the top- that"s less than half open. PTO would be more like a strong 3/4 open.

You see sir...I KNOW the WD's and my post is correct...

The Throttle lever will never run the full arc of the quadrant...

Lets say the max throttle position at Full throttle is 80% of the Arc from the top..the PTO setting is right at (roughly) 1/2 of that 80%...

Mine ran the full arc and so do the 2 my dad has. PTO is 1400, no load is 1700. You are right about the 82% difference. With much of load on it, it will settle into 1400 riding the gov anyway. Arguing over where pto speed is is a silly argument

I am 45 years old - but have been driving this particular tractor for about 40 years. We put a ton of hours on it grinding and hauling feed when I was a kid. Also, pulled in a lot of flare box loads of ear corn back in the day. The throttle lever did indeed go all the way to the bottom of the arc before the overhaul - now it stops about an inch short. It doesn't get the same rpms now, just by listening to it, and it can't pull much of a load now. I will take a look at the linkage. Thanks!!

I might be confusing the throttle and hydraulic linkage, but isn't there an adjustment that changes the position of the lever. I know there is for hydraulics.

There is a procedure in the service manual or operators manual (I think service) for setting the governor. It has to do with taking some measurements and bending the governor rod on the left of the engine. I went through the procedure once after I overhauled mine about 5 years ago. The low idle speed is set at the carb.

I see...that must be from some linkage adjustment combination I have not come across..

I figured the throttle lever not going all the way down insured FULL Throttle...!!

The absence of full power..? I am sure you have looked the linkage over well and did not find any obstruction...

By the way.. I am SO GLAD to actually find someone who has actually put good OLD TIME Hours in the SEAT of one of these and Knows them...!!

When you overhauled it, you didn't replace the Governor spring did you..?? If so, could it have been the wrong one.?

I know there are newer ones that will give more RPM than the WD-45 has..

Hope you will stay in touch..hey..have you seen any AC snap-coupler OR bolt on ( Old Type) Sub Soilers for SALE..!!!

Mine was in the barn up the road, with my drawbar still on it ( Old type Sub Soiler) and the darned thing must have grown legs..it is gone and I used that sucker a lot..!!
There is nothing more surprising that when that AC engine knuckles down and goes to WORK...!!!

What a machine...!
