Battery

I have an Allis 170 gas.I haven't been able to start with the cold winter. There is a battery that tests 12.6v. It has 450cc. Is this battery large enough to get the start done? What is the correct battery? Can I go bigger, and how big? I just bought this tractor
and do not know a lot about it. Thanks in advance

If all is good it should start it but if you have something off like timing or carb setting which can make it harder to start it may not be enough battery. As for what should be in it I do not know if there is really a set number etc for that as such. Me I just try to buy the biggest battery that will fit with the most CCA and be done with it.

What happens when you crank ? Battery runs out of juice quick ? I use a 550cca battery in a "B" with a 125 cubic inch motor... You should be using something in the 650- 700 range........ bigger is better....... and you loose a LOT of cranking when the battery is COLD.

450 is too low for cold weather and your size engine. If the battery is new you may tweak cold starts if all else is good. The starter draw in cold weather will give a poorer quality spark when you actually could use a stronger spark for successful cold starts.

I go along with others and get the largest that will fit box and the highest cca you can get. Make sure all your cables and connections are good.

Not knowing the compression, oil, tune up and condition of your engine I cant say what battery is needed, HOWEVER in similar sized tractors that MUST start in extreme cold temps I like a battery that has at least 750 up to over 1000 Cold Cranking Amps and a 450 CCA MIGHT BE a bit on the small size BUT SUBJECT TO THE CONDITION OF YOUR ENGINE AND TEMPERATURE. I recommend the heaviest rated most CCA and reserve capacity battery that will fit in the box for best cold temp starts plus good heavy cables and tight shiny bright connections. Sure a smaller battery can 'WORK" but if its extreme cold or your engine isnt in top shape a higher CCA battery has a BETTER CHANCE OF GETTING YOU STARTED.......

PS that 12.6 volt reading points to a full charged battery subject to temperature and meter accuracy etc but for more informative battery condition testing I use a voltmeter plus hydrometer plus a load tester..........

Do you have good spark when cranking the starter? Are you getting full battery voltage at the starter terminals? How much does the voltage at the starter drop when cranking the starter? One thing to check is the condition of the battery cables and connections. Hidden corrosion at connections or under cable insulation can create extra resistance that does not show up until the cables carry a high amps.

A fully charged 12V battery fully charged in good condition should be 12.9 to 13.1 volts at rest.
12.6 is just over 59% capacity.

If it is turning over, has good spark, and the tune is somewhere near right, you might try a half second shot of either in the inlet for the air cleaner before you crank it over and flood it. It is best if they start before any flooding happens and the battery is still strong. I don't think the gas now helps either. I take off the cap to the air cleaner intake, give it a quick shot, put the cap back on and start it. If it's cold this helps.
