PTO - Turn Engine?

Question - can I turn the engine with the PTO - with the PTO engaged and tractor out of gear?

I have a situation with an Allis C - 1941 that has a stuck engine .. (I have had a number of engines that were stuck and all came "unstuck" after lots of Marvel Mystery Oil - BP
Blaster and Diesel fuel .. on the cylinders) ..

But this one is a tough one .. I haven't worked on it much .. I have had them set for 3 months - and seem futile - and by working it a little at a time . ... finally come
loose and NOT smoke !!! and run fine . . (except one engine smoked on an 8N Ford) ...

My situation is I can't really get a good grip from the front .. here is my question

Why can't I put the transmission in NUETRAL and put the PTO on ... and turn the PTO to turn the engine?

Will this work or is there something I am missing .. ?
Thanks so much ..

The gearing puts the PTO at such a disadvantage of trying to turn the engine, that with a stuck engine, I don't think it will work. Might have a little better luck with the belt pulley. But employing a lot of leverage might break something. I think removing the pan and leveraging the crankshaft is the way to do it. It's a good idea to have a look inside the pan on a stuck engine anyhow.

Good way to break something in the drive line.I'm a firm believer in pulling the head on a stuck engine to see what the original problem was before trying to get it loose and many times even if you get the engine freed up the head still has to come off.Takes only a few minutes to pull one of those heads.

Agreed, the pto runs at 540 and the engine somewhere around 1500rpm. A 3 to 1 reduction more or less. Going the other way a 3 to 1 stepup, 1/3 the torque applied to the pto is applied to the engine.

I agree with Bob and T farmer. What is not considered when comparing the B's and C's with stuck engines of other brands is that the under hood muffler they were designed with kept the rain water from running into the manifold then getting over the pistons. When the above hood mufflers went into the manifold as the under hood muffler which does not seal out the water. Because of that this is what you will normally find when the tractor has not been inside 24/7 for its life.

Thanks much .. I think I will go the route of soaking .... and pulling the head ..

thanks so much . no sense ruining a good engine ... being impatient !

On all the engines I have freed up I used the starter to free them up. The starter was made to spin the engine in the first place and the only thing IO have even had get hurt by doing that is a push rod and even then I have only had that happen once in over 30 engines that I freed up

Take the exaust manifold off inspect then the head and the oil pan off and inspect.. You'll know how to proceed.
