WD-45 connecting rods

Going by a catalog I have it says the WC, WD, WD45,and D-17 are the same rods if gas engine

The reason i'm asking is I saw some on ebay that the ad says they are the same,I just want to be sure before I bid on them. Here's what i'm trying to do, i'm getting my 201ci motor rebuilt and putting a 226ci bebuild kit in it,i got a WD45 crank for it and the guy that's doing the engine told me if we got WD45 connecting rods we wouldn't have to mess around with shims

I believe the ones that use shims are older from a WC,WD. I think the 45s all had modern inserts that were sized right and no shimming was required. The old rods and block can be bored/reamed to accept the new no shim inserts. Automotive machine shop can do it.

WD45 and newer didn't use shims on the connecting rods. The rods will interchange between WD-45, D-17, 170, 175 and E Gleaner combines BUT, I would never use just one rod and mix it with three others. There were many different forging/casting numbers and I know the weights and heat treat was different between generations. Newer 1977 year rods were obviously a little stronger than 1953 model year rods, even tho the parts system will tell you they are all the same. So, if you're going to change, get four rods from the same donor engine.

Am I wrong on the crank having different specs? I know a d17 crank won't fit in a WD block but don't remember why.
I was thinking it was the main diameter and thrust bearing location.

Mains are 3 inch and thrust is the center on G-226/D-17. Mains are 2 1/2 inch and thrust on the front on W-201/W-226.

It's true that the D17, Gleaner E, and later 226 cid engines have bigger mains than the WC/WD/WD45 engines. That's why you can't use these later cranks in WC/WD...but a WD45 crankshaft drops right in. All 201 and 226 engines use the same size rod bearings so all connecting rods from WC-175 are interchangeable.
