Initial Start up on 1938 WC

1983 WC serial number WC72047 with magneto ignition. Just got engine overhauled and put back together and ready to start up. Question is, "Should I put some oil in the breather cap on top of the valve covers and if so, how much?"

I know until the tractor really runs a bit the valves will be dry. Or is there another way to accomplish getting some oil to the valves better than my idea?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

A smear of grease or some oil during assembly would have served. I know, too late now. Probably won't kill it to just run her till she oils.
That was what happened when they built her...

On any engine I rebuild I smear STP oil treatment on the rod and main bearing the rings and sleeves etc. Been doing it that way for 40 plus years now. Never had problem with one yet

You could pour some oil on the rocker arms and maybe squirt some on the valve stems. If you start it with the valve cover off you will know when oil gets up there, not a
bad idea, is what I do just to make sure it is getting up there. Watch the oil pressure you may have to adjust the relief valve spring with more less washers. You don't
need much pressure on these engines, I think the factory spec was 12 or 15 lbs. but check.

The Nice thing about this tractor engine is you can run it with the valve cover off and you can see if its pumping oil. Its a low pressure. Pre lube everything as suggested and fire it up. You'll know quick enough. Good Luck
