Allis Chalmers d17 puller

I have been doing a lot of research on how to increase my horsepower and slow down my gear in my d17 with a 262 engine. I was also trying to figure out if the 6 cylinder diesel would be a better option. Any ideas?
 
Don't know what you're thinking about when it comes to slower gears?? Any 262 gas engine can/will always make more HP than any 262 diesel UNLESS you turbocharge the diesel. That 262 gas can easily have a 190XTG or G combine carb added to it and raise the PTO HP up to probably 80 ish or so, while the non turbo diesel is 51 HP. Also, some places may not even allow you to compete with a 6 cylinder as engine in a D-17...not stock. A turbo diesel in a D-17 isn't stock either.
 
I want to slow down the gears in the transmission is like to cut the speed in half if possible. Thank you for the info
 
Here in central MO, a guy I knew (since passed away) used the fact that Allis made a cotton picker with a 262 gas engine and was based on the D17 tractor chassis to qualify his pulling D17 with a 262 in for the classes he ran in.
 
He may have got away with it but a D17 was never offered with a 262 gas engine. The D 17 diesel did have a non turbo 6 cylinder 262 engine.
 
The D 17 tractor was built from 1957 - 1967 ( 226 4 cylinder gas). Allis chalmers did not put a 262 gas engine into a cotton picker until 1982.
 
Norm Swinford's book indicates 1982 was the last year of cotton picker production. Indeed, AC was near death at that point. By then, they had switched from the 262 to the 301, and finally the four cylinder/turbocharged 200 engine.
He doesn't give a date, but indeed states that the 622 pickers were built over a D17 frame, with basically, either D19 engine. Also stated is that converting these power units back to a tractor was frowned upon, for obvious reasons.
 
Mr. Shadetree21....Why do you want to cut your speeds in half?? I happen to pull a D-17(for 30 years) and always use 2nd and 3rd gears. what do you know that I don't understand ?? If you're thinking of pulling it in 7000 lbs and up....DON"T.....you're wasting your time.

I pull dead weight with mine for 5 years and there is no weight class. I weight up to about 16,000 and pull but in the past couple years I haven't been able to keep up with everyone else so I need to change something
 
The point is Allis Chalmers never built or offered a 6 cylinder gasoline engine for the whole production run of the D17 (1957 - 1967).
 
Well I have 2 d19s one gas one diesel I have 2 170s both diesel and 3 d17. If it's possible in the rules where I pull I want to put the d19 gas which I believe is the 262 in it. But if I have to use a stock block i'd like to know how to build one
 
Allis Chalmers history is screwy . I found an Allis site that states that the Allis chalmers cotton where built after 1982 under the name Agco Allis. I know Chalmers records are not right because they say that their mowers where built in the south when actually they were built in the LaPorte works as well as some cotton pickers. Allis Chalmers first square balers were said to be American built but where not. They where assembled in USA but came in sub assembled from over seas (England). The demise of Allis Chalmers was said to be unions fault but it was also just as much managements fault . Their management had problems.
 
You could swap the intermediate gears ahead of the hand clutch for D-19 gears and that would slow down low range about 12 to 15%. That's the only slower gear combination I know of. Sounds like you need a 100 HP D-17 puller engine.
