7000 fuel gauge help

Dad and I are working on his maroon belly 7000 this winter, and I am having trouble getting the fuel gauge to work. The
original sending unit came out in pieces. Ordered a new one from agco, and installed it. The gauge will only show 1/4
tank of fuel. I have took the sending unit out, laid it on the the floor board, and with the arm all the way up the
gauge will still only show 1/4. If I move the arm all the way down the gauge will go to empty. The wire from the
sending unit to the gauge when grounded will peg the gauge empty, when open will peg the gauge full. What am I missing
here? I also verified the the new sending unit was the same resistance as the original with a meter. The ground wire
for the sending unit is also good. We sure would appreciate any ideas! Thanks.

connect pos and ground to ohm meter. move float and see if resistance varies. if it does then something else wrong. check wiring and gauge. if does not vary probably is defective sending unit.

You mention a ground wire, but as I recall, there wasn't a ground wire running all the way from the sender to the gauge, along with the "hot" wire?
When you are moving the sender float up and down, do you have a definite, good ground hooked to the sender frame?
I ask these questions because it sounds like you have eliminated a bad gauge, or a mis-matched sender/gauge resistance, and this sounds like a bad ground. If the sender is only grounded to the tank, there can be resistance anywhere between the tank and the gauge. More modern applications tend to run a dedicated ground wire all the way along with the "hot" wire for such reasons, as well as, because so much plastic is used now.

Bob is right about grounds. When I work on my JD's I always run a dedicated ground from sender to gauge or gauge mount. The JD manual says the gauge is sensitive to ground resistance. I assume the 7000 is as well. Grounds may have been good coming from the factory but after many years grounds through joints are poor. The same for lights.

Merry Christmas.
