Allis D17 - Where does the power steering fluid go?

I have an Allis D17 Series 1.
It has power steering. The pump is in front of the distributor, (toward front of tractor). I can not find any place to check or fill the power steering fluid. It seems that the power steering don't work as well as it used to, so I'm hoping it just needs fluid. (I have never checked the fluid since I bought the tractor a year ago).

* Where the heck is the filler cap? (this has me puzzled)...
* How do I check the fluid level to know it's correct?
What type of fluid do they use, is is standard automotive Power Steering fluid, or something else?
* If it's not in need of fluid, what else should I look for?

One other question: The starter quit, and I took it to a motor rebuilder. I just went there yesterday and he said the starter is so bad, that it would cost more to rebuild than to replace it. He said he could get me a new one for around $370. I was rather shocked at that price, when not long ago I bought a new starter for a Farmall M, for $120. It seems that all Allis parts cost more, but that price is ridiculous. Just wondering if any of you know some place that has a good price on USED or REBUILT starters for the D17?

(I already looked at Ebay and Amazon), not much on there. And dont bother suggesting ASAP. I used to buy from them, but their prices have gotten outrageous in the last year or so). [ASAP wanted $260 for a rebuilt Farmall M starter, and I bought a brand new one for $120 on Ebay].

Thanks for all help!

Take the front grill off. There is a 4" is so high tube that is the vent for the PS. Remove this, fill to the top of the gears.

Ok, I dont have a grill, but right in the front there's a thing that looks like a pipe that stands straight up, probably 1-1/4 inch diameter and 3 to 4 inches tall. I assume that's it. Does the whole thing unscrew, or just the tip of it, or does it even screw in, or does it lift off, or what? You said to fill it to the top of the gears, but fill it with WHAT KIND OF FLUID?

Thanks!

Whole thing screws out. I use UTF in my D-17 the Orchelsn 303 fluid. I buy it at that place because as of late they have it on sale a lot for under $20 and if I go in on Tuesday or Wednesday I get another 5% discount. Price on sale has been $19.99 ya almost $20 but hey it is a penny cheaper then $20

The top cap is just the vent cap. There should be a screen inside the tube. But yes the whole unit comes out via the large nut.

I use 5w-30 in mine.

You really should buy the Operator manual. That would tell you about the PS unit, and way more...locations of fill/drain holes, type of fluids, normal service intervals, etc. Lacking that, you may well damage more than the cost of the manual. For a Service manual, look for I&T AC-17. Service manuals tell you how to fix it, Op manuals tell you fluids, etc.
