Afternoon allis gurus. I have a 185 diesel that I would like to install a freeze plug heater on . First what size are they and if there is one better spot to install. Any help would be appreciated .

That's a different style than I've seen before . I'll have to check out the block tomorrow . Thanks

dont waste your time on a frost plug heater buy a circulating tank heater. plugged in for 2 hours at -37 this morning and it fired right up and that was with a 180

I have a freeze plug heater on the 200. 30-45 minutes and she pops right off. Sure is nice to reach up and turn on the heater. I got instant heat in the cab.

I'd like to have one for my 190xt but that location does not have mounting bolt holes, just the plug.
I guess I could drill and tap but I would be leery to do it.
Plus the big Oil line is in the way.

As I recall, the OEM heater on the 185 was the type shown in the catalog Bob references. Held in with two capscrews, I think in the hole forward of the rear most one. The plumbing is very different on the turbocharged engines. I have purchased generic soft plug heaters by hole size and been successful. They're held in with a little tab that reaches across the hole, and you draw it in with a screw in the middle. We used to install tank type heaters on 180's-190's, etc. But I thought the in block heaters lost a lot less heat, plus are a much neater installation.

Yeah I don't like the tank thingy hanging off the side.
The freeze plug install looks to be the best thing, but I see your point on the plug location as my 190 has the oil cooler line there. I don't think a non-turbo 301 has it.

In this case, the block heater shown is a 1000 Watt unit. should do a pretty good job!

Well I have a freeze plug unit on my 5000 , works fine . I put a lower hose inline unit on my 4000 . Im thinking to go with the zerostart plug unit. We've never had -37 here and God I hope we never do. Have had wind chill that a couple times though.
