Both brakes rods on the D17 IV I bought are broke an appear to be frozen in place (baling wire was used for a temporary/permanent repair) but I haven't really put force to them yet. If they are frozen in place what is the procedure to replace them? I have new brake rods and springs on the bench ready for installation.

If you can reach in the axle housing with something and unscrew the rod from the inside you should be able to screw the new rod in place. Be advised the nut inside the housing is a flat piece of metal with threads in a hole. It can roll over making it hard to get the rod screwed into it. If you cant get the rod unscrewed, then the axle housing has to come apart. not a hard job if you have a cement floor and a engine hoist. would suggest a manual, even a IT manuel will be ok for this.

They may very well be rusted in place, and if you twist them off, you'll have to remove the axles to replace them!!! So be careful. I'd disconnect each rod at the brake pedal and then point the rod down towards the ground. With a torch tip for brazing, reach inside the brake rod hole and heat up the trunnion that the rod is threaded into. Have a good Vise-Grips already to go and see if they won't move. Lots of WD40 and patience. I have had to abort the mission a time or two and cut off the hooked end of the rod and thread the rod to 3/8" NF and install a yoke from a model 180-185 tractor and then do the adjusting with the yoke instead. If you are able to remove the old rods, use plenty of anti-seize on the threads when going together.

We'll start soaking it up with Liquid Wrench tonight. I have a feeling that my FIL tried to adjust them and that is how they ended up broke and when he saw how much new rods cost he left them broke.
