Just bought my first tractor, AC 6080

Hi all, very excited to post that my wife and i just bought our first tractor, an Allis Chalmers 6080. It is a 4wd model with a loader, cab and a/c. My FIL has a 25 horse kubota that we have used for chores around the farm, so this is a big step up for us. We are going to use it for haying. I have a handful of questions and am hoping you guys will be able to point me in the right direction.

I think the best thing i can do for myself is buy an owner and service manual. The tractor has been sitting for at least 5 years so I would like to do a full filter and fluid change. I need a few parts and have really hit a wall trying to find them searching online. I'm missing a banjo bolt on the fuel rail. I found the part number in the AGCO catalog (74322188) but i'm striking out on finding a dealer to order it. Can someone recommend a good dealer to give a call and order it from? I'm in maine and it doesnt look like there is anything around here. I did find a link to one place but nothing on the site would suggest the sell AGCO parts.

The cab is blocking what TractorData says is the location for the serial number. I'm not sure what year it is but i would love to find out. Is there another location i can find the SN or am i looking in the wrong place? (right foot location)

How many PSI am i supposed to put in the front and rear tires? All the writing on the rubber is faded off, i cant even tell tire size. The rears are loaded.

I'm pretty new to the tractor scene, can i get the filter and fluids at any tractor store? DO i need to go to a dealer or can I use a Tractor Supply Co. What else do you guys recommend doing before I put it to work?

It does have the thrust bearing update. Can someone who has one of these advise me on the best way to start it and run it in regards to being gentle on the thrust bearing? I noticed when it was running, the PTO was spinning even though the lever is in the off position. Am i missing something here? The tractor is leaking where the banjo bolt is missing so i didnt spend a lot of time troubleshooting. It is starting a little hard right now but until i get the fuel situation squared away i'm not going to worry about that.

Thanks all, real excited to join the community and hear back from you. Interested in any and all comments/suggestions. I attached a picture of it we took today after it was trailered home.

Doesnt look like the picture made it, trying again.

They were an OK tractor, once the update was made. Easy on fuel, torquey little
engine. Used a neighbour's for a few days years ago, remember something about an
unusual PTO engagement.
Best to get an operators manual ASAP, parts should be available from most
Agco dealers. Good Luck! Ben

I have owned one since 1980. Mine has over 8000 hrs and still going strong. The serial number should be on a sticker on the left side. Stand on ground, open door and look at your clutch pedal. Should be right behind it. If not, look on bellhousing on right side right above the starter. Will be stamped in bellhousing. If your PTO is turning, the PTO coupling must be engaged. Sit in seat and look down to left. Will be a knob right behind emergency brake lever. Push it down to shut off PTO and up to engage. Always leave PTO clutch lever down even if PTO is not being used otherwise PTO throwout bearing turns all the time. Don't worry about the clutch. Mine was upgraded to the newer style many years ago (has the dealer installed bearing on the front of crankshaft to limit end play). Mine has been replaced once since then because my tractor mostly runs a hay baler ( I use the clutch a lot ) and I wore out the splines on my transmission input shaft and had to replace it, so I replaced the clutch as well. I know this tractor pretty well, so if you have anymore questions would be happy to help. Be advised mine is not the four wheel drive version.

Get the owners manual (e-bay) and a A-C shop manual, they are better than IT. PTO operation: There is a pull/push rod one left of seat up for engaged. Long handle on right engages the PTO clutch. Disengage the rod on left when not using the PTO and keep the clutch lever forward, that takes the pressure off the main bearings. The only time you lock the clutch lever back iw when you are using the PTO and want to stop it. I hope your PTO clutch is working, mine didn't and it is now being split and replaced. $2K. I have a 6060 and it is a great tractor, best engine Allis ever made(and the last one). Tractor is a Fiat with an Allis engine.

Lots of parts on e-bay, Tractor Supply Hyd. oil is OK, trans and hyd system takes 38 quarts.... I think. I use Rotella 5w30 and get it at TS. Hyd and PTO clutch have cables and they are fairly easy to free up if seized. Brake shaft is often seized too, got to take it apart to free up.

I bought a 6060 new in 83. I use 15x40 diesel oil. Good thing about AC is have a lot of generic parts. You can get filters at natpa or any good parts store. But a Massey Ferguson dealer should have parts or at least order books and parts. Serial no. Should be behind clutch in plain site. If not on bell housing on right. Keep lever to left of seat down when not using pto. When using pto I idle tractor push clutch pull right hand lever back. Then pull left lever up. It will rip a bit. Then the right hand lever with the button controls the pto. Keep this lever forward when not using pto. Good luck.

Thank you RMG i found the sticker. The number is barely legible but it tells me i have a 1983, only about 40 away from 1984. I don't understand why there are two PTO levers. Is it that one is more like an on/off switch (coupling?), and the other controls a clutch?

That would put rod on the left as the switch and the long handle on the right as the clutch? If that's the case, my clutch is disengaged, so why would the PTO still be turning?

Thanks JK, this is the method i used to find that part for the fuel line. When i go to find a dealer near me i start running in to walls. I think i will give that dealer a call.

Thanks Vic i think i've got it. The way you are recommending using it is the opposite of how i found it so hopefully nothing is worn out. However i think something must be wrong because with the right level in the "PTO off" position, the PTO is still running.

Clutch may well be out of adjustment. If used as originally instructed, that system was OK. But most ignored the instructions, and left the long PTO clutch lever on the right latched rearward. That puts constant pressure on the crankshaft, pushing it forward, right through the thrust bearing.

The lever on the left is a mechanical coupling. The procedure for operating PTO is, pull the clutch lever back, pull up on shifter lever, then release the clutch lever forward, starting PTO operation. Reverse for shutting it down.
