D17 power director clutch

To check level of fluid in series 1 D17, is dipstick sitting on threads or threaded in? Also, I find no adjustment on foot clutch. I checked and had plenty of lining when I split tractor to replace crankshaft, but have about four inches of free play and would to shorten it. Thank you ..

According to the manual:

"To adjust the clutch pedal link rod, disconnect rod from pedal and turn rod in or out until the bottom of pedal arm is 3/8" above the toe plate on platform at a point measured 1-1/2" rearward from the tip end of the toe plate. This adjustment is not too critical as long as the clutch is fully released when the pedal is pushed forward."
"The link rod adjustment does not change the release bearing clearance, but merely positions the clutch pedal closer or further from the operator. If there is no free play, it indicates the clutch lining or clutch parts are worn and must be replaced."

Four inches of free play is quite good, and I usually shoot for six inches when I replace a clutch. As the clutch wears, the freeplay keeps getting to be less and less. If you want the pedal closer to you, lengthen the rod or add a block of wood to the pedal.

Thank you for replies. If four inches free play is
ok, I will leave it alone. Still not sure on
dipstick for Power Director clutch. Dipstick
screwed in reads ok, but sitting on threads (not
screwed in) doesn't reach oil level. Thanks
guys...Dan

We've always checked it screwed in. D17 IV, D19, 175, 180s. D17 Series IV manual states "Operate engine at high idle for three minutes and shut off engine. Immediately after shutting off engine, remove and check oil on bayonet gauge". I would think Series I is similar. Doesn't seem logical to just have stick sitting on top of threads while engine running.

Check oil level with the dipstick screwed clear in after sitting for 10 or 15 minutes on the level or overnite. That page in the owners manual that claims running engine at high idle and then checking the oil?? rip that page out of the book. That is simply stupid.

Thank you for the info. My operator manual has no
specific instructions other than maintain oil to
full mark on dipstick. One of my other tractors
(green thing 620) says to check engine oil with
dipstick resting on top of threads, not screwed
in. So, I just wanted to be correct. Thanks.. Dan

My left knee didn't like the clutch coming up so high. So I bolted a stop so it just came even with the brakes. Then gave it a inch of free travel.
