WD45 Locked up in all but one gear

Was mowing with sicklebar mower going back and forth between first and reverse when suddenly it got stuck in first gear. Pulled the cover off and got the shifter unstuck. Now it shifts into all gears but locks up in every gear except third. Pulled cover back off...can't find anything. Going back out to check interlocking of shifter rail shafts. Anyone have any other ideas?

That's your clue - the shifter is not taking the transmission out of third gear when you move the lever into neutral. Then when
you move the lever to shift into another gear, you are shifting into two gears at once. You may have broken the third gear shifter
rail or fork, or it's worn down to the point where it does not engage the third gear slider. More disassembly is in order but a
shop manual would be helpful so you know what things SHOULD look like in there.

Hmmm....was using first and reverse when it first happened. forks and rails seem ok. A little wear on the 3-4 fork but not terrible. interlocking seems to work ok. It's jumped out of third since I've owned it and rarely use fourth. Replaced cover , new shifter handle and other misc small parts about 4 years ago but still jumped out of third. Has otherwise worked ok since. All gears slide ok manually in transmission with cover off.

Second clue. Jumps out of third. You might want to look at the collar the shifter fork engages if the shifter fork looks ok to
you. Again, the manual might show you what the innards are supposed to look like.

everything in trans looks good except edges of teeth mushroomed on third gear. Like I said, has worked fine with bad third for years. tried to post some pics but this web site won't upload them .

Does the PTO still work? Reason I ask
is I bought a WD that the PTO gear
blew apart went up in the transmission
acted as if it was stuck in two gears
ran great till you let up the clutch
then it died.

I think it still works...PTO was running when problem first happened. I have the top cover off...I engaged reverse with my fingers and put others in nuetral. got on and hit the starter and reverse works that way. So must be issue in shift cover. Maybe a bent fork? They look ok tho.
