Are the hydraulics on an Allis Chambers WD proprietary....... by that I asking must they be replaced, ONLY, with Allis Chambers hydraulic cylinders or can any hydraulic cylinder (of proper size) be used? Thanks in advance.

You can use other cylinder as long as they are made for the high pressure system that A/C used. Cylinder have to be at least a 3000PSI or they can go bad fast or even go bad in such a way as to get some open hurt. Higher then 3000PSI is even better since a lot of A/C tractor have 3000psi or so, so higher is better just in case the relief valve sticks

Remember that the volume of oil in a WD is quite small. So regardless of the pressure rating, a remote cylinder for a WD would generally be smaller than the ones used on a low pressure system. Too large a cylinder will move slowly and may run the reservoir out of oil.

Thank you. Your information was very valuable. One more question....... How do I determine the proper length of the piston travel..... sorry not familiar with the proper terminology.

To measure the stroke of a cylinder you first have it closed to its shortest an then measure center to center of the mount holes. Then you extend it out as long as it will go and measure center to center again. Then subtract the smaller number form the bigger number to get how long the stroke of the cylinder is

A lot of times the cylinder will work as a extra tank so the fluid resevor is not as big a problem
