Questions about Grain Drills for Food Plots

I am trying to find a way to plant clover and brassicas (small round seeds) that works better than a cyclone seeder. Lots of old drills around with the fertilizer boxes rust out. What are the chances of finding one with a seed box that works????? What brand would I want to look for? Or am I shooting myself in the foot....again? Can't justify $4-6K for a Brillion.

You need a drill with a grass seed attachment. It is usually a small box on the front side of the regular box. Google grass seed attachment for drill.

Food deer/food plots I mix the seed and fertilizer together and set it so I need to cover the plot at least twice with a broadcast spreader, works good for me and I get a good stand. Also some of the new plots have a lot of tree roots and some rock that would tear up a drill.Once I spread the mix I run over it with an old pull type disk thats not set to cut any, then I run over it it with a cultipacker
a couple times.Small plots in out of the way places would be a real challenge with a drill anyway.

I guess I was not clear. Don't want to plant anything but clover and/or brassica. I have not had good luck with a cyclone seeder, either hand held or tractor mounted. Seed is so fine it is impossible to get a uniform seeding on half acre plots. I am looking at 10 to 15 lbs per acre. Oats, buckwheat, rye works fine mixed with fertilizer in cyclone 3 pt seeder. I am thinking a drill might work for me. I know I need a working seed box and I have never used a drill. QUESTION, what do I need to look for when I look at a used drill? Is one brands seed box better than another? Am I wasting my time looking for a used drill with a seed box that works.

I realize Brillion makes exactly what I want... but I can't justify that kind of money!

On most old drills the fertilizer box is usually the one rusted out but the grass box and the grain boxes are usually pretty good.I have a small Oliver Superior drill with steel wheels and it does a very good job of seeding its never had fertilizer in it so that's in good shape too.About every consignment sale I go to there is an old drill or two there or put a wanted ad on CL

Some drills have the seed box in back and mounted low versus the traditional front and high box. I can't think of anything right now. One other option most grass seed box come of easy maybe mount it on a packer and install a motor on that. Also check around and find a Gandy unit

Bill I hate to shoot you in the foot about this. We have such a problem with deer and turkey over population in our area. Please realize what you may be getting into. We put out a large garden not over 50' from the house. Deer destroys it. They ate everything. Put out a short acre of sweet corn. Should have gotten around 12000.00 off it this year. What the deer did not get the turkeys did. We never got 1 ear. Had it fenced with electric fence done according to DNR specks. DNR offered to give me as Many anterless deer tags as I could fill. We did not have this problem 5 years ago. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Since your in n.y. keep your eyes open for an Ontario drill.200 to 500 dollars.they were made in n.y., are affordable and do a good job.I have one and it will do what you want.
