oil leak

There is plate /cover on the right side of the engine block of my 36 WC, the gasket is leakin oil behind the oil filter, I would like to remove this plate/cover and replace the gasket, I can't find any information as to what this cover plate is for and is it a simple job

All it does is cover the push rods. Very simple job and the gasket is easily available.

If you don't have the gasket or don't want to buy one you could probably clean off the plate and block good and just use a bead of silicone gasket maker. There is no pressure behind it, as was said it just covers the pushrods, this area is open to the head which breathes through the breather on top of the valve cover.
