Noob here, I was just offered a D17 for $1800.

I know nothing about AC tractors, and not much about my Ford 8N. I've been looking for a tractor to do some work at 8000', mostly grubbing and some grading. The 8N is too light for the work, and the AC was sitting there, and he offered it for $1800.

It runs, and everything seems to work. I don't know what class or version it is. Also worried about using the 3 point with the snap-connect deal, but a buddy says it can be done.

If it works ok, and looks ok seems like a good deal. The only thing I tried so far is the clutch, and trans and they worked fine. I'll get the SN and try to find out which version it is on Sat.

What say you? will this grub and grade at 8000' elevation? Sandy/loamy soil, and creosote bushes.

D17 is listed at 63hp per tractor data dot com
I've never worked one but IIRC it's sorta a bigger version of the WD/45's
and the WD's I have two and they can do more work than they can physicly do
as they are too light for traction adding weight just makes em work more
if my WD could get enough traction it would pull my 8000 lb loaded honey wagon up the hill I now use
a 75 hp tractor on
we did use the WD (28 hp per tractor data)and it does pull it up the paved drive hill but not the
gravel one due to wheel spin
as to snap coupler to 3 point if you have a decent set up it's the same as any other 3 point cat 1
YT sells the conversion kit
will it work t 8000' not sure
but if it's a gas tractor I'm sure the carb can be reworked for that or a kit but in
a good carb shop should be able to tweek it if you're not sure how to

Wide front, narrow, power steering, good rear rims, which series? A lot of variables. I paid $1800 for a wide front power steering series 2 and thought I did ok. The snap coupler system is probably superior to the 3 point adapters out there, but you do need to find the equipment. Should do just fine. I did a lot of blading and grubbing kind of work with my WD. I thought it was a brute till I got this D17. Thing is a beast.

Still don't have the SN, but will get that tomorrow.

The only adapter I've seen for the 3 pt is over 1000 bucks on here. Wonder if there's a cheaper version? Link?

On my 8N, I can use the main long mixture screw to adjust the mixture for the altitude. Wondering if the carb on the D17 has a similar mixture setting? I can likely get a smaller main jet if needed from some place.

Not to bad a price on it is the tires are good and it runs good.

As for a 3 point I built my own on the D-17 series 1 that i have. Not all that hard to do if you have a couple 3 point link arms and some welding

Neb test list ha a D-17 at 52HP. No way a D-17 is going to produce more HP then my Oliver S88 which is listed at 55 HP as per the Neb list. I have both and there is no way the D-17 is going to out do the Oliver S88

A D17 is almost twice the tractor than an 8N is. You can often get a Snap-Coupler blade for $5-600. As far as pulling a real chisel low to work up the ground, it"s a bit weak...hard to find a chisel small enough. I still think that you have better options to build a runway. The D17 would be fine for maintaining it.

Almost convinced myself to get the road grader, and then sell it later. Turbo-diesel doesn't care much about altitude. Or - I could spend a few weeks quality time on a tractor and a chisel, then blade it.

Scroll down on those tests a bit, Old. Test F max hp is pretty much a draw. D17 at 48.64 and the S88 at 47.08. The Oliver pulled more but I'd chalk that up to the taller tires. The Oliver may have the upper hand, but it's not quite as sure thing as you sound. I've ran a D17 and a Super 77 diesel. Love them both. For anything but PTO work, I'd pick the Allis.

Will your Super 88 Oliver pull a 4x16 plow? Most gas and D-17 AC's in my area pulled either a 4x14 or 4x16 mounted plow...A neighbors NF Series 1 D-17 diesel was a horse on a 4x16 plow...In my opinion both the S88 and D-17 are good tractors...

In this area almost no one does any real plowing but then again I'm in the Ozark mountains. I know the D-17 would not handle the NH850 baler that I pull behind the Oliver S88. The D-17 I have is a series 1.

Biggest plow I have is a 2-16 and it has not been used in years. Shoot I have some 4 or more plows on the place but they never get used

Well, back tires are junk, it's an early series, no 3 pt on the back and the coolant is old and crusty. I'm gonna pass. No sense in spending $2200 or so to make it right.
