Distributor and drive

I was at a swap meet today and picked up a distributor and drive that looks just like the one on my B engine. Trouble is it is painted red. Seems to me I have heard that red ones will fit on orange, can anyone confirm this. I may have to try it and find out. For the price, after I clean it up and get new points and cap it will make a good spare ignition system for the B and WD, which now has a mag. If it fits. Thanks Tom

It sounds like maybe you are describing the very popular Delco magneto replacement assembly? Does the drive you mention fit right into where a magneto was mounted? They fit most anything that had a magneto.

Yes, it looks just like how the magneto flange looks and has the two prong drive dogs that fit into a slot in the back of the governor drive. It is not the different looking WD-45 distributor. What I bought is the distributor and the 90 degree gear box the distributor is driven from.

Both shafts (distributor and 90 degree drive shaft) were stuck with old dry grease. All is apart now for cleaning and reassembly. I am missing the plastic insulator that the wire terminal goes through, (knew it was missing when I bought it) and the eccentric point adjusting screw. If I can't find either without too much trouble I can probably make both if I need to.

Thanks for your reply. Tom

I bought one of those insulator kits once. I can't remember where I got it! Two piece plastic thing with a special stud. The distributor housing is supposed to have light oil in it. The oil just sits in the space between the housing and the bushing and seeps into the bushing. I don't know about the drive part, but since it was all supplied as a kit by Delco, I assume it was built the same way.

Yes, the drive has the 1/8 npt plug for adding oil to the bushing. Same as the distributor. I have pressed both bushings out, cleaned, and pressed them back in already. Oiling these and keeping good grease in the little gearbox is something that is often neglected I think. I realized about it when a lady friend had a problem with her Farmall A. You could time it and it would fire a couple of times and then stop. Turned out to be rusty and broken gear teeth in this gearbox. Since then I have been a real fan of checking these and adding oil to the two bushings.

Delco made a distributor conversion kit. It looked very much like the factory Allis distributor. The Delco would fit Case,Ih,Allis Chalmers. The price of the kit new was $26.00.

Yesterday I made and installed the little eccentric point adjusting cam. Drilled out hole in distributor plate to 9/64", turned 9/64" offset stud on end of 5/16" rod turned to .285" dia. to fit hole in points, cut off, cut slot in head, installed with small washer on back, peened, tried points on it, fixed. Now for the insulating block. I see that Stiener tractor has them for $14, but maybe I will try and make it.
