Magneto, Coil Replacement

We have an Allis CA with a FMJ magneto. We think that the coil may be bad on it. Question: Can the coil be replaced with the mag still on the tractor or does the mag have to be removed from the tractor? Don't really want to remove the mag unless we have to.

I suppose it could but I wouldn't know why. I'm not sure what you would gain. It sure would be awkward.

I would think you would have trouble getting the wires inside reconnected.

The coil on FMJ mags are held by two set screws in the top of the mag. The screws often need heat to come out. It would be almost
impossible to heat the screws with the mag on the tractor.

Taking the mag off shouldn't be hard. All you need to do is remove the small cap and note where the rotor is pointing. When you
put the mag back on make sure the rotor is pointing in the same position as it was before you removed the mag.

Thanks for the information. I guess the mag will be coming off then. I was just worried about being able to get it back in time, but I will do what you said and note or mark where the rotor is pointing to. It starts so easily now, I was just worried that I'd never be able to get it timed right again.

Send me an e-mail and I can send you a copy of the manual for that mag since I have it in this computer
