Transmission and final drive lube for a model C

Hey folks. My dad owns a 1942 AC Model C. He was worried about checking the final drive grease. I pulled the two plugs from the bottom of the (big gear housing) on each side of the tractor. Nothing came out so we need to fill it. Is 80 weight gear grease sufficient?

Also I checked his transmission grease/fluid from the check/fill hole on the left side of the transmission housing. I could see plenty of fluid in there, but it was a pale yellowish color. Is that okay and if not how do I change it and what do I fill it with?

Also he plugged the hole in the back that had the original lightweight hydraulic cylinder hooked up to it. I'm assuming it used the same fluid from the transmission? If not then I need advice.

Thanks folks

Manual states 140 for the finals. I'd run a universal hyd fluid in the tranny. Does share with the pto if I remember right.

I use the 85W-140 that way you have an oil that will work for both real cold weather and hot weather. I also use the UTF in the transmission/rear

From what I understand 140 is impossible to find. The guys on the other AC page say 85-140 is just fine.

You have the oil type right. But you might want to do more than just add. It is likely there is a bunch of sludge in the bottom of the final drive pans. It would be worth taking them off and cleaning them. I sometimes add the fluid before putting them back on. If you fill to just under the the plug (maybe 3/8" below) it will be close enough when the pan is up in place and the gear raises the oil level a bit. I use two studs, one in each end of the casting ( bolts with no heads) to guide the pans in place, then when a couple of capscrews are in you can remove the guide studs. As for the transmission, it sounds like, from the color of the oil, it might have some water mixed in with it. Water can come down the shift lever if the boot isn't good, or wasn't at sometime in the past. The proper oil is 80-90 gear oil unless you have hydraulics. Then it is 20 weight engine oil, however now most folks use "tractor lube", a combination hydraulic/gear lube that will work fine. It was't around when the manuals were written and said to use 20 weight engine oil.
