190 XT Electrical Problem

So I'm using the tractor, getting things ready to make hay, shut the tractor off for 10 minutes, go to start it up and nothing. I find all the battery cables loose so I tighten them but that doesn't help. I ended up jumping across the starter solenoid to get it running. I'm not sure where to start here. I know the key is dead so the push button to start tractor is also dead. None of the gauges on dash work either. Is there a fuse somewhere under the dash? The one next to the ammeter is good. What is the purpose of that fuse? I just got this tractor so I'm not familiar with it yet and I don't have an owners manual either. Just looking for some thoughts on what to look for. It's a series III diesel if that makes a difference.
Thanks

As I recall, that fuse was for the lights. That tractor is old enough there was no thought given to fused protection like on later tractors. And as I recall, the most likely source for troubles like you describe was at the key switch. Pull the dash cover off and you may see the trouble down around there with corroded terminals that then get hot, melt, fall off, etc.

The good part is that tractor is old enough the wiring was very simple and straight forward. I think at that point there was still a wiring diagram in the operator's manual, which was easy to follow.

First off remember clean tight and bright on all connection or you will have odd problems. As for the ignition switch it could well have gone bad and you might try turning it on and off a number of times and see if one time it works and the next it does not work seen that many times on many things. Or it maybe a simple safety switch I do not remember if the 190 had them or not. I could probably look in the I-T manual I have sicne years ago I did have an XT190 but it was to much tractor for my small farm

Check the connections on the big terminal on the starter. The wire to the key switch comes from there. It supplies all the power on the tractor.

Manual has electrical diagram
No safety switches!

Two fuses on the dash to check, but these are mainly for lights and such.

I ended up finding a loose connection on the key switch. My neighbor helped narrow down the problem when he hit the cover over the dash and the low oil pressure light came on. Thanks for the help.
