Guys

I have an Allis D17 that I affectionately call "Magic Man" and wish to know more about her. I currently do not have the serial number and now know where to find it thanks to this site. I thought I would post up my latest pondering and see what the smarter people think, so here it goes. The hand controls to the left of my steering wheel seem to have no ability to hold their intended position and what I mean by that is, once you set the controls they drift right back down to the lowered setting and cause the implement to drift back to its lowest setting. I am not sure if this is caused due to a lack of good hydraulic pressure or a simple spring that I am overlooking. I apologize for not speaking the lingo and sounding a little under informed as to the parts of a tractor. I am new to the game and welcome constructive criticism as to what these levers are intended to be called. I will be ordering all of my manuals after verifying my serial number. Thanks in advance everyone!! Russ

The shorter lever should be horizontal/down and locked there with the teeth. Leave it locked there and do not use it unless you pull a mounted plow. The longer lever has an "UP" (raise)position (with a locking window) a middle "HOLD" position and a "LOWER" position and another window. There is a spring on the lever to keep it pressed up against the quadrant and to help lock the levers pin inside of either window. If the levers spring is broken, you must get it fixed before anything will work correctly. The spring will keep the lever steady in the middle HOLD position. So from there....UP is UP........DOWN is DOWN......and in the middle zone is HOLD. If the load still settles, there is a problem with the hold valve inside the hydraulic pump or a leaking hose or packing inside the transmission, which will soon run the hydraulic system out of oil and overfill the transmission. If there are any levers to the left of the seat, that changes everything on operation of the levers on the steering wheel.
