Allis B restoration update

I am ivor from uk
I posted a question here few days ago wondering if my Allis B is worth restoring I am still undecided but soon I will decide and if I say yes I will need to make new gasoline tank the tank which is on tractor now is corroded and as it is very close to engine I will make new tank in a different shape so I can put some sort of insulation around it to prevent heat getting to fuel
I am looking forward to replies

I have repaired real badly rusted tanks for them with fiber glass mat over the outside. I cut the mat in strips, soaked them in resin and fit the strip tight without overlap. It is on my mowing tractor and has not leaked in seven summers of use. After it cured I sanded it smooth and then coated it with a thin coat of bondo. I sanded it back smooth, primed and painted it. You would have to dig at it to tell it was not as it was made. I did then coat the inside with a liquid gas tank liner as well. You will not get enough heat from the engine to cause a problem. All the B's, C's and CA's have the gas tank almost touching the rocker arm cover. That is thousands of tractors that way. I never heard of a problem from the heat of the engine.

hi Dick L
thanks for your interesting reply, yes I know many thousands of tractors give no trouble with gasoline tank under hood but a while ago I was reading an article in motoring magazine that modern gasoline is more volatile.. are there any fuel experts out there.. I had not thought about repairing tank with glass fibre

I guess I would have to ask more volatile than what gas. Gasoline used to run cars and tractors has always been very volatile in open flames. Not so much in a closed container.

after reading that modern gasoline is more volatile it is just an idea I had.. also I have a 5 litre plastic container which I use for 2 stroke mix for chainsaw it is a proper container for gasoline and if it half full or less it bulges if left in hot sun

It would bulge if it never had gas in it and you let it sit in the sun. Unless the gas on your side of the pond is different than ours, I wouldn't worry a bit about it. Pretty sure the gas cap on a B is vented, so you have no pressure buildup to worry about. If you are worried about it volatilizing away, just run on the low side of empty and you'll never need to worry about anything but running out of gas on the far side of a gas can.

I have seen a B worked very hard on hot summer days covered with oil and hayseed, to the point of boiling over and the gas tank was never an issue. A couple of times the area around the exhaust manifold caught fire from the hay and oil leaking from the valve cover, but the tank, no problem. Don't worry about it.

Check out old 20 parts company, run by a guy called nick. He is able to supply replacement tanks. I have one of his tanks fitted to my 1947 allis b.
