Sickle Mower

Short of versatility between tractors, is there much difference between a belly mounted sickle mower and a 3 pt model? Does one have many advantages over the other?

In many places the belly mount is far better plus a belly mount does not tend to make for a sore neck since with any mower you need to keep an eye on them to make sure things are going correctly

Depends on how many tractors you have. Dad can have the 82S off of his WD in under 5 minutes. I can unhook the 80R from my D17 in under 5 minutes. Took me an hour to put the 80S on my WD and a good 2 hours to get the WC mower under my WC. Putting a belly mower on a B/C/WC is an all summer commitment for the tractor as far as I'm concerned. A newer side mount (82S), or any rear mount will be much faster and allow you more versatility with your tractor.

As far as I'm concerned a trailer mower like the AC 82T or a New Holland 456 has all the other sickle bar mowers beat when it comes to cutting hay,the trailer mowers will corner better and
smoother saving a lot time plus hooking and unhooking is quick.

One day I would like to put up a little hay, mainly as a hobby. I have a WC, a Ford 2N and a Case 1190. I figure the 1190 would go on the baler (sm squares), the 2N would go on the rake and find a belly mounted sickle for the WC. I really don't have any uses for the WC besides puttering around on back roads because it doesn't have a 3 pt. Thus it won't work on any of my implements except a plain old pickup bed or lawn trailer. So I'm not too concerned about dedicating the tractor to a mower. It doesn't run right now and I've never run an old school sickle mower so I'm figuring the cart before the horse, but by my thoughts that would be a good fit for a mounted mower being a narrow front, it would be more agile for cornering and such.

Aaron named several models of mowers. What models would I be looking for to fit a WC?

They only made one that would fit. The WC mower. With some ingenuity you could pull a trailing mower, just need to put a hyd pump on the tractor somehow.

That I didn't know. I'd put a 3 pt mower on the Case. Live PTO and hyd are near requirements to avoid losing your sanity and becoming a raging alcoholic trying to cut hay the real old fashioned way. Cutting hay with my D17 and 80R can be maddening enough.

Year ago I built a mid mount sickle mower for the Farmall B I had. Took parts form 2 or 3 sickle mowers and built one for it. I also mounted a Chev power steering pump on it and ran it off the fan belt for the hyd system. I mowed a good bit of hay with that set up. I later traded it off for the NH850 baler I have now. I wish I had taken picture of it because I'd love to see how I mounted that pump on it so I could mount one on a tractor I built form 3 bad tractor

Carpet farmer. I have been cutting hay for 50+ years. I grew up using a belly mount mower. You could NOT give me another 1 to use. Do yourself a huge favor, find a New Holland, JD, or Ac 3 point hitch or pull type belt driven mower and pull it with your Case. You will find it far easier to now with that set up than the WC.
