Well here goes, hope it don"t sound to dumb, My little Allis chalmers model G is in need of a valve job, need some advise as to the proper procedure to follow, I assume that I should pull the head and remove the valves,Im thinking I should remove the valves and take them to an auto parts and have the valves ground after this do I need to reseat the valves can I do this by hand, this is where I am lost any help and sggestions would be greatly appreciated

If you need to take the valves some where to get them refaced they you need to take the block to them as well so they can get the angle of the seats matched to the angle of the valves. They would make sure the stem ends were the correct length as well.

Be thankful that the block of the G is attached at only one end. Still, you might consider taking it to a shop that can do the valve job without taking the engine block off the tractor.

I took it he wanted to do as much as he could himself. Once every thing is removed from the top to remove the head and then removed the manifold with carburetor with linkage to get the side plate off to get at the valve keepers the block is about stripped. It might not be to save money but to learn by doing as much as he can at home.

You can remove the valves and using valve grinding compound check to see if they need to be ground. Apply a little compound the the valve seat and rotate the valve back and forth using a valve lapping tool. If this shows that the valves don't seat well, then they must be replaced or reground after which they will need to be lapped into the block. It might be cheaper to buy new valves. LOL Bob

The little thing will fit in the trunk of a small car, for gosh sakes, pull the engine and take it to the shop and have the valve guides checked and replaced as needed and the valve seats ground. Mucking around trying to seat new or reground valves to the block with grinding compound went out at the end of the 30'S.

(Unless you can find a mechanic with a seat grinder that does house calls.)
