6 volt Charging System Troubleshooting

Is there a similar diagram for the charging system on an Allis Chalmers tractor (specifically a CA) like that I've used for the Farmall tractors? I need a flowchart or diagram so I can troubleshoot the charging system and get everything in working order.

Here is the one I've used for the Farmall tractors.....

If you have Delco generator and regulator that chart should work

If you have generator with cutout
1. With engine running, ground field post on generator. If it now charges, problem is from field post back through the charge section of the lights/charge switch
2. If still does not charge, jumper from ARM post on generator back to output of cutout. If it now charges the cut out is bad. If still no charge suspect generator

When jumpering be careful not to create an arc at the generator post as that can damage the threads.
On Field post connect to field first, then to ground Checking cutout connect jumper to ARM post on generator first and then to output of cutout.

Also if possible connect to the connector rings or nut and not the post threads.

I have linked my Charging Troubleshooting Procedure. It covers BOTH Cutout Relay as well as Voltage Regulator charging systems as no need to reinvent the wheel for each of the thousand times this question is asked.

In Par 5 it tells how to by pass the VR or relay by grounding the Gennys FLD post to see if non charging is a genny versus a VR problem.

With a simple jumper wire you can diagnose many charging problems without the need for expensive equipment

Make sure the Genny and VR and/or Cutout Relay and especially the light switch Low/High control switch/box IS WELL GROUNDED since if not she wont charge properly

Make sure the Genny is Polarized (see my procedure)

Print it out and take to the shop and it should help you find the problem

Thank you John T. You are the electrical guru!! Would you happen to have a "good" wiring diagram for that tractor ? I can't find one that is readable online. My tractor is a 1954 I think. Mine has a funny looking little regulator sitting on top of the genny

I linked a URL site below that may have AC wiring diagrams.

That "funny looking little regulator sittin on top the Genny" may be a two wire (BAT and GEN) Cutout Relay orrrrrrrrr if its 3 (BAT GEN/ARM FLD) or 4 (LOAD BAT FLD GEN/ARM) wires its a full fledged Voltage Regulator. REGARDLESS it needs a good ground to the genny and the genny needs a good ground to frame.

If its a 2 wire Cutout Relay the gennys FLD post wires up to a Low/High charge dash Light switch THAT ALSO NEEDS A GOOD GROUND OR IT WONT WORK. I see so many of those low high charge switches fail due to lack of a good ground.

Insure good grounds at relay and switch and genny and polarize the genny then see if she charges with gennys FLD grounded to frame will tell a lot.

Tried to read it by zooming in but it becomes blurred. Saved it as photo and as well blurred. Any way to have it as some other form say pdf that may give better results. Like a flow chart for this kind of
stuff.

The wiring diagram is in the Operator manual. Also check the I&T AC-11 service manual. Google "Allis-Chalmers Model CA wiring diagram".
