Another AC mod D road grader question

I had posted some time back about changing the manual steering of this puppy over to a power box. That part works great but I
had another question; While grading with it the blade hydraulic pistons always "slip" down requiring constant readjusting of the
blade. A couple of neighbors (one of whom should know his stuff) rebuilt the cylinders years ago (because of rust on the shafts
and subsequent leaks) and said that the piston lip seals were designed (angled or what have you) to only apply down pressure so
fluid will leak past them while trying to hold the blade up. This doesn't sound right to me. Anyone have experience with these
cylinders?

The rods have "Vee" packing. The pistons may have cast sealing rings or "V" packing. It could have been put in backwards. The lips of v should be facing down on piston and if rods are pitted real bad they will tear up v. So may be rod time.

I appreciate your response but am a little confused by your answer. First of all the rod is not leaking out. Second, I'm thinking if the 'V' (on the piston) is facing down (backwards?) then the rod would stay up but have difficulty applying "down" pressure. Is there only one seal on the piston? Wondering if there were 2 with one supposed to be facing up and the other facing down.

My parts book shows a packing assembly consisting of 7 rings of packing material for the lift cylinders. I would think that they would be available at any good hydraulic shop. It may be possible that the nut on the packing assembly could be tightened to fix the problem.
