I think the ring gear has shifted on the flywheel and now the starter gear can't engage it. Haven't seen that happen before.
 
Only way to be sure on that is to pull the starter off and have a look see to see if it has moved or if the teeth are bad. My WD45 some times when I try to start it the starter just spins up but does not engage the ring gear. Been doing that ever since I got it some years ago
 
It would have to slide back towards the engine for that to happen and that is physically impossible. Pull the starter. I'd bet either the bendex is bad or the teeth on the ring gear are bad...or both. If you are cheap you can flip the ring gear. Don't think the gear is more than $50. Have to pull the engine to do it.
