underhood muffler

The B had a straight pipe prior to B55301, then oval under hood muffler to B-114400, then the long muffler beginning in 1951. The oval shape was to give the manufacturer space to install muffling material.

Thanks,I mentthepipe above the hood is oval

No above hood oval pipe on B
That was a later "D" series think, say around 1964

I thought the underhood muffler was till 1948?

My 1950 B has the oval muffler under the hood. I had never seen that until buying this tractor - the one we had when I was a kid must have been newer than that, or was modified.

I think the earlier B's had a small hole in the hood, so either the under hood muffler, or the above hood muffler with the longer pipe on the bottom could be used. I think later B's had a bigger hole in the hood, and used a muffler styled like the WD/WD45.

You're talking about how they squeeze the outlet pipe down flat? I've wondered the same thing. I've removed that portion on mine and put an angled pipe on there so that if I'm caught in the rain, I don't need to think about covering the muffler.

They squeezed the outlet to increase the velocity so the exhaust would go over your head and not in your face.
