Allis chalmers D motor grader

We installed a new head gasket on the d motor grader with a 262 conversion the head and deck looked pretty good we found a stripped head bolt so we heli coiled the hole and put all new bolts in they all torqued to115lbs so far so good. we had to pull start it to get it to fire it seems to purr 50 lbs oil pressure cold 20 lbs warm hope that's good I had the starter rebuilt and rewired everything but the starter was binding someone put the wrong bendix a 13 tooth we installed a 10 tooth and now it starts beautiful every thing seems to work. hydraulics, transmission, brakes, clutch seems a little stiff. Can anyone tell me is there a way to adjust the drive chains one on each side is very tight and the other very loose. I'm also looking for some parts fuel tank, steering box so far . Any help or info would be appreciated. thanks

Parts machines are hard to come by. There is no way to adjust the chains in the tandems. When I got my D grader one chain was off on one side. When I was searching the tandem box with a magnet to find the pin for the master link I came up with lots filings and bits of metal along with the pin and a badly beaten up 9/16 socket. Apparently someone dropped the socket into the tandem box and didn't bother to take it out. It was just large enough to catch between the driven sprockets and the bottomof the chain box. It nicked the ends off some of the teeth and stretched the chains until one came apart. I did cleanout the chain box and reinstal the chain but the chains in that box were stretched enough that the chains would jump a tooth now and then. I eventually replaced the chains on that side. The other side was fine. The chain is 51 links, 1-1/4" pitch plus a connecting link. It may be possible to take one link out and replace it with a half link to shorten the chain.

I am surprised that one chain would be tight and the other loose on each side. Possibly the grader was used with mismatched tires on each side so that one tire on each side was doing all the work and the chain to that tire got more wear. All the drive tires must be identical as they are all locked together. I wouldn't worry about it unless the loose chains are loose enough to jump a tooth now and then. You might be able to put a half link in. Check with a screw driver to see if you can fold a link enough that a half link would work. The other option is to put the two tight chains in the same box and put two new chains in the other box.

Thanks I really appreciate your input I'm going to clean the boxes out and look at the bearings and also the middle bushing where the box
pivots. My Ac d model grader book doesn't cover much on this . I'll try the screwdriver trick maybe move the chains that's a good idea is your
machine gas or diesel ? Do you know a few people that own these machines ?. I replaced the radiator with a bigger one I believe the old one
may be original if anyone is interested thanks again

I tried to post you a reply a while back but the this site killed my post as I mentioned the name of the other Allis site in my reply. You might try posting on the construction section of that site as it seems as if someone was looking for a rad a while back. If yours started out with a gas engine the original rad would have been too small for the larger engine.
