D-19 pops out of gear

Hey all,

I have a D-19 gas which pops out instantly of 3rd on flat ground or downhill and will pop out of 2nd down a steep hill. 1st and 4th seem fine. I've been just working in first on hills and working around it with my little baler baling on the ground, but I just got a kicker baler and wagons and am just thinking what if it decided to pop out of first going down a hill with baler and wagon... Freaky... What would you say is worn here? The shifter? Or would it be the gears? Thanks, I'ld like to make it safer, especially If it's the just the shift lever. Thanks
Eric

I can not say for sure what it really wrong with it but can say it was a common problem with many of the first series of many of the AC tractors. And or a person who owned it in the past like to shift on the fly which is not good either.

I have a 19 that jumps out of third when going down hill. That seems to be the only problem so far.

You have serious problems inside, requiring a teardown. There might even be a thrust washer broken in two causing extra endplay in the gear stack on the top shaft. Shift transmission into second gear and remove the cover and take pictures.

Yes, you can pretty much see everything that matters. Like I said, shift it into SECOND gear and remove all the bolts and lift it up and out of the way. Take a couple good pics with it in neutral and it will be pretty obvious as to what going on, and I'm afraid it won't be good. Helpful to have the seat up and back out of the way.

wow, why second? just curious... Poor tractor mustve had a hard life, when I got it I had to do the foot clutch and last year had to do the power director clutch. Gonna be a new tractor haha. Thanks!

Take my advice listen to drallis him and a couple other fellas on here walked me through a complete transmission rebuild on my 185 . Couldn't put a price on their knowledge.

wow thanks, this site is truly amazing. Im pretty daunted by it to be honest, but I guess a little exploratory surgery wouldnt be so bad...
