Allis 6080 Good Bad and Ugly

Found a 4wd Allis 6080, surprised that Tractor Data says it was built in Wis. and has a Allis 433TI engine with a turbo. What should I look
for? What are the weak spots? What do I check on the turbo? Are parts available for reasonable price? Pictures look like it does not have planetary gears in front drive, were they prone to breaking front axles?

I just need another project!!!

I'll be interested in what the Allis experts say on this. I had heard the transmission and FWD were sourced through Fiat.

Great little engine. Domestically produced hyd. pump., and I think the radiator was made here too! Otherwise, Fiat drive train.

The major problem was the archaic PTO clutch/drive system. You had to pull back on a long, HARD pulling handle to disengage the PTO clutch, pull up on the PTO shifter, then release the PTO clutch lever to get PTO operation. The shifter would grind, and the whole operation was cumbersome, so people would leave the PTO engaged, and leave the PTO clutch lever locked back. This throwout bearing pressure would over come the crankshaft thrust bearing, push the crankshaft forward, potentially causing a lot of damage. When I quit AC(dealer) in 1984-85, I had already put a new block and crankshaft in a 6080. AC had a retrofit program where an external Timken type bearing was installed off the front of the engine, giving you lots of thrust bearing protection. I installed several of those.

We had a 6060 on the farm. It should have been a 6080, but that's another story. Lots of power(keep it wound up) and economy. When Dad and I went our separate ways, neither of us wanted to buy the others half, so we sold the 6060 with just over 4000 hours.

I recall parts being a problem way back when. I can't imagine it's better now, but you never know. OEM parts are more readily available for my Fiat/Allis dozer now, through New Holland, than they used to be.

The turbo would be the least of my concerns.

Neighbor has an fwd , loves it . I've ran it , I think it's a great tractor , don't recall having too hard a time with the pto. It's been there 20 years and can't think of any issues he's hand.

I own a 6080 great tractor. Basically from the clutch forward is Allis and in the back is Fiat. The tractor is very economical on fuel, and power is good as long as it's rpm's are kept up. I haven't needed any parts lately but most are available from AGCO, just have to pay the piper. I will agree that the pto is a stupid setup. The setup caused some engine problems, sending the crank out the front of the block. Later tractors have a bearing and support to help stop it.

I have a 6060. Same except just 8 gears. Have run it at 100 hp. Its entire life. Bought it new in 83. Has a lot of hrs 8000 plus. Has pulled a 10 ft. No-till drill at 7 mph every spring since. Clutch fingers will wear out. Throw out bearing turns all time. But welded on fingers last. Parts are not a problem. A few in tractor junk yards. My motor has just had one diesel pump, water pump. About 3 alternators and airconditionar pumps.

Well i am NOT the expert on A/C's but i am learning on one 6080 , as last year about this time i was in the engine of this tractor for a couple burnt valves and now once again i am working on it on the other end for rear end problems and it is the third time for this tractor but my first time doing it . Now it may have something to do with our part of the country. as this tractor works on side hills and also it may have been run low on oil but this is the third set of gears in the Diff. And NO it was NOT a fun job . Now can i say that this is the only tractor around here that has taken out the Diff. Nah , about one a year on avg. and it is NOT color specific , also having duals set wide and making hard turns at the headlands with tillage tools still in the ground and standing on the brakes to make the turn makes them little gears with NO bearings spin the oil out and you are metal to metal and they will weld themselfs to the shaft and now you have a total locker rear and then you do not turn .
