Gemmer Steering Gearbox

There are no cross-references to the Bower BT-060 tapered bearing race. I took a different path rebuilding my Gemmer steering gearbox. First I purchased two Timken 4A tapered bearing cones and two Timken 6 tapered bearing races. Next I assessed the worm drive gear and decided against pressing it off the shaft. Instead I turned off the tapered bearing cones (on a small 9X20 lathe with a quick-change tool post and triangle cutter inserts) and discovered they are indeed part of the worm gear so approach this with caution. Here is a picture of the removed bearing cones.

Some machinist experience would be helpful but if you take this somewhere you might mention the overall length should be the same when finished. I measure the inside pocket of the gearbox with the inner race removed. Then proceeded with installing bearings on the worm gear.

For the BT-0600 upper race I bored out the old race to accept a new 6 Timken race, same race that fits inside the gearbox housing at the bottom.

so what are you going to do now?
I did the same thing and used a 3/4" ( I think that was the size) bearing for the end of the shaft because I could slip it on ok. At the wheel end I got a slightly larger bearing and slid it on the shaft and shimmed it into place. Works great
With a large enough lathe you could machine a couple thousands of the shaft and use the same bearing on both ends

Please read my parts list TWO of EACH bearings. That would mean yes I used the same tapered bearing and race on both ends. Without pictures and hand signals it's going to be all but impossible to show & tell what I did. Just trying to help others and run into a oddball forum that isn't picture upload friendly. Heck if I know how that first picture made it. The stars must have aligned for that split second and sheeezamm

The Timken 4A tapered bearing is a higher grade bearing and has more rollers. If you have to ask how much...you know the saying.

Other suggestions are: putting an O-ring in this recess to seal up the box. I'm using an 80W gear grease in mine.
