Model D road grader steering revisited

I finally got to taking apart the steering box on the model D road grader I?m working on. Matt in PA was kind enough to offer me a power
steering unit for this machine but the problem is that the system still uses the original box which is all but shot. Looks like there
were needle bearings in the roller that disintegrated and fell down into the sector bushings and chewed everything up. Some of you have
said that you converted a GM (Saginaw) power box to fit (which seems like a much more economical fix). My question is; Can those that did
share some pictures of their conversion? Also; did you splice it into the grader?s hydraulic pump or add on a separate pump? Thanks in
advance.

I see that there have been no replies so here goes. I have seen one D grader using a power steering box from a pickup. They used a separate belt driven ps pump. I have seen two D graders that rigged up ps, one totaly hydraulic, the other a booster on the steering shaft, that used the grader's hydraulic system. They both said it worked but lost a lot of steering power when other controls were used. I rigged up power steering using components from a sp combine. My system still uses the grader's steering box and I use a separate belt driven automotive type ps pump. I can steer it with one finger. If you steering box is shot I would either go with a fully hydraulic system salvaged from a sp combine or use a ps box from a pickup. Use a separate pump for best performance.
