Allis Chalmers B Clutch Adjustment

We have a 1939 Allis Chalmers B that has a very touchy clutch with a lot of free play. We have tried to adjust it but have not been able to find any way to do it. Any help would be appreciated.

Service manual for my C says the clutch should have 1 13/16" from the back plate to the outside edge of the clutch fingers where the throwout bearing rides. Doesn't say, but I get the bad feeling tractor needs split to do that.

I'm quoting this directly from the operator's manual.
"Clutch adjustment"
The proper clearance of 1/4" must be maintained between the clutch release levers and the clutch release bearing. To adjust: Remove the small cover from lower side of the clutch housing and turn each of the adjusting screws until 1/4" clearance is obtained. This will allow approximately 1-1/4" of free pedal travel. Adjust each lever exactly the same and tighten locknut."
I'd try that first. You might have to turn the engine over to get to the release levers. aka, fingers on the pressure plate.

I did this recently on my '39 B. As Dave O'Brien says, you must turn the engine over a little bit with each finger to adjust it. It is tough to get into that small space, but still easier than splitting the tractor. I used a 1/4" thick strip of metal, bent at an angle to measure the gap, since you can't fit a ruler into the access hole. Good luck!
