d17 which connecting rod is which?

If they don't have numbers marked on the con rod caps your pretty much out of luck. If they are new and your crank has been cut it shouldn't matter. If they were just
taken out and not marked you will have to have them resized.

It doesn't matter which rod goes in what
hole. But does matter what cap goes with
what rod. Always center punch on side
number of dots where rod and cap came
from. But I have matched rods to caps by
simply trying them to crank using plastic
gauge. You can tell some by simply trying
and looking. Not end of world.

Each connecting rod and its mating cap have been stamped with a number/letter from the Factory. When assembled correctly, these numbers go on the same side, which makes the rod bearing insert tang notches also on the same side. The connecting rod piston pin clamp bolt goes towards the camshaft when assembled correctly. You'd better get a Service book of some kind, because if you don't know exactly how to assemble and position the piston pins correctly, you will have a piston pin carve a groove in a sleeve, ruining your overhaul. The connecting rods are NOT centered in the piston !! Never clamp a connecting rod beam in a vise and leave teeth marks on the beam. Always clamp a pin punch in a vise and slide the hollow piston pin over it to loosen and torque the piston pin clamp bolt (25 ft lbs). Torque rod bolts to 45 to 55 ft lbs.
